Test instructions – Type 2

These instructions (type 2) are for those test kits:

  • Code HVS – HIV test kit for saliva – 3th generation

Test instructions:

  • Before starting the test, read these instructions through carefully.
  • Remove the film from the test device just before you carry out the test.
  • Components of the test kit:
    • Test device
    • Sample tube with buffer solution
    • Saliva collector (small stick with soft swabbing surface on one end)
    • single-use pipette
  • Carrying out the test
    1. If you wear dentures, please take them out.
    2. Rinse your mouth out gently with warm water.
    3. open the small  sachet, take out the test device and lay it on a clean, level surface. The best results are obtained if the test is carried out within one hour. Take care not to touch or contaminate the well or the test strip.
    4. Take the saliva collector out of the sterile packaging (Note: Do not touch the soft swabbing surface!).
    5. Slowly wipe the saliva collector gently across the upper gums, from one corner of the mouth to the other (see Fig. 1).
    6. Then, starting at the other corner of your mouth, wipe in the reverse direction back to where you started. (see Fig. 2) Wipe for approximately 5-6 seconds.
    7. Now invert the saliva collector (see Fig. 3).
    8. Gently wipe the saliva collector gently across the lower gums, from one corner of the mouth to the other (see Fig. 4).
    9. Then, starting at the other corner of your mouth, wipe in the reverse direction back to where you started (see Fig. 5). Wipe for approximately 5-6 seconds.
    10.  Now open the sample tube with the buffer solution and insert the saliva collector- swabbing end first- into it (see Fig. 6).
    11. Now move the saliva collector up and down in the tube 6-8 times. Press it against the inner wall of the tube (see Fig. 7).
    12. Now remove the saliva collector from the tube (see Fig. 8) and use the pipette to draw some liquid from the sample tube (see Fig. 9).
    13. Place 4 drops of this liquid into the round hole on the test cartridge (see Fig. 10).
    14. Wait until the red line(s) appear(s). It should be possible to read off the result after 15 minutes exactly. The result must not be read off after 30 minutes!
  • Reading off the result:
In general the lines do not have to be exactly the same, one line can be a little lighter in colour than the other. In addition traces of blood may sometimes be visible in the test device, but they have no further effect on the result.
    1. If you see a red line in test zone (T)  as well as the control zone (C): this means you could be infected with HIV-1 and/or HIV-2 (see Fig. a).
      >>> Please consult a doctor as soon as possible and have the result compared with a laboratory test.
    2. If you see a red line in the control zone (C) but no other line: this means you are not infected with HIV-1 and/or HIV-2. If your symptoms persist, please repeat the test or consult a doctor (see Fig b).
    3. If you see a red line in the test zone but no line in the control zone (C): this means that the result is not valid. You should repeat the procedure with a new test kit and follow these instructions carefully (see Fig. c).
    4. If you see no line of any sort: this means that the result is not valid. You should repeat the procedure with a new test kit and follow these instructions carefully (see Fig. d).
